Hyejeong Yoo (b. 1992, Seoul) is a photographer currently based in Leipzig, Germany. She holds her B.F.A. in Performing Arts and Media/Photography from Chung-Ang University in Seoul and completed her Diploma with honors, followed by Meisterschülerin (postgraduate studies for artists) under Prof. Heidi Specker at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (HGB).
Working across photography and video, Yoo creates minimalist and meticulously staged compositions that reveal how relationships, spaces, and structures of attention become inscribed upon the body. Characterized by natural light, silence, and duration, her works occupy a territory between photography and performance. Through gestures, postures, and carefully constructed spatial situations, Yoo attends to the subtle ways care, authority, intimacy, grief, and memory manifest themselves physically. Rather than approaching identity as fixed or autonomous, she understands subjectivity as something shaped through encounters, memory, and cultural conventions.
Seemingly ordinary actions—sitting, waiting, carrying, looking, or remaining still—acquire heightened significance, exposing the fragile negotiations between autonomy and dependence, proximity and distance, presence and absence. The seemingly empty gazes of her protagonists convey a quiet sense of presence while resisting psychological transparency, inviting viewers to attend to what the body discloses when language recedes.
